Avi Goldberg – Photographer – Shefer

avi-goldberg 4“The animals, the plants, the buildings, the people, the landscape, and nature—they are what taught me how to photograph.”

“I love to return to regions I have already visited, to stand in the very same spot and remember why I chose to photograph in one way and not another. From time to time, I returned to lands where time has left its mark, to remember the language and the people and to photograph the transformations of time.
I love to preserve through the camera the sights, but also the scents, the colors, and the sounds. The photographs have not undergone processing or alteration. They remember the moment exactly as it was, the place exactly as it appeared then, and the people in their true form.”

TombsRegarding Avi Goldberg’s exhibition “The Creation” held at the Municipal Gallery in “Yad Labanim” Raanana:
“Despite its mechanical operation, the camera is not objective. The ‘camera eye’ is nothing but an extension and executor of the photographer’s eye, and a direct continuation of his gaze, which dictates the way of seeing and describing.
Sometimes a photograph is the fruit of long and hard work, sometimes it depends on a moment of luck, where all the necessary elements united: object, position, photographer in the right place, and shooting conditions. However, the only condition for a successful photograph is that behind the camera stands a photographer with a heart and an eye, a relationship to the subject, and especially a strong desire and readiness to capture the right second.
Avi Goldberg’s endeavor to ‘illustrate’ with his photographs the text of creation appearing in Genesis 1 and Psalm 104 is worthy of praise. From the outset, this required

His focus on eternal landscapes, full of majesty and mystery where echoes of the past resonate, and on conducting a journey and encounter with the forces of nature and the creatures dwelling within it.
The result of this struggle and journey—photographs that draw us into the interiority of those landscapes; to the hidden behind the revealed; to the open and distant versus the close and intimate.
Photographs that emerge from nature, but also return to it as they preserve their beauty in their simplicity. In some of them, we feel that their creation was through a prolonged seclusion of the photographer in the landscape, his merging with it, while his camera connects the external light and atmosphere to his internal/spiritual feelings as a man of senses/an aesthetician.
Others, especially the panoramic ones, will project a sense of a landscape that continues and flows into infinity, beyond the boundaries of the frame; a landscape that strives to touch all the subtleties of nature, where everything flows and changes incessantly and yet constitutes a delicate texture of harmony and order.
Goldberg’s photographs in this exhibition are a song of praise to the Creator and His unattainable majesty in the sense of: ‘Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, Thou art very great’… (Psalms 104:1).
The perfect connection found in them between surface, texture, topography, and light constitutes a visual expression of his gaze upon the beauty of the Divine creation out of awe, excitement, and wonder at its sublimity.”
